Weston found himself bored with all the books in his office. In all his years he’d never seen that one coming. He stood and walked around his office as if trying to find something new. When nothing came out of his search, he left out of his office and found himself outside Karter’s room. There was no heartbeat. He turned just as Axel came walking down the hall.

“Is Karter in there?” Axel asked.

“No.”

The look that came over Axel’s face was alarming.

“What is it?” Weston asked.

“He left out yesterday angry, and he hasn’t come back yet,” he said.

Weston didn’t see the problem.

Axel shook his head. “I just have a feeling something is wrong.”

Weston finally understood the look on Axel’s face. He’d been with Axel for a very long time, and he trusted the man with his very life. His instincts were above average; it was one of the reasons his sire had assigned Axel to Weston.

“Then, by all means, let’s check into it,” Weston said.

Axel looked at him with confusion, and Weston knew that he’d involved himself, but he couldn’t care less. He may be letting Karter go, but he couldn’t push the pesky emotions that were attached to Karter. His well-being was the only reason they were letting him go in the first place. He gestured for Axel to lead the way. After another second of hesitation, Axel finally turned and moved.

They ended up outside of Eddison’s office. Axel knocked to be polite but didn’t wait for an answer and entered. Weston let him do all the leading as he followed behind. He was concerned, but it was based on Axel’s intuition he’d let the man’s gut lead the way first.

“Eddison, did the dot move?” Axel asked.

Eddison clicked the mouse a few times before he squinted at the screen. “No, he is still exactly where he was last night.”

“Not even an inch over?” Axel asked.

Eddison shook his head. It only took a second before they were all vamp speeding it out of the house and toward the area the dot was. The moon shined bright and the stars twinkled, and Weston couldn’t help but hope Karter was just watching the stars and would ask them what they were all doing out there. Add in a few “fucks” and Weston could practically hear Karter.

“Karter,” Axel called out once they reached the area.

Eddison called out his name as well. Weston searched the area too. If he needed air to live, he was sure he’d be hyperventilating at that point.

“Wolf?” Weston called. Karter had always responded to the nickname he’d given him. Yet there was no response, not even a rustle of grass.

“He isn’t here,” Axel said.

Eddison came over with a tablet in his hands. They all looked at the dot that indicated where they were.

“Call the witch,” Weston told Eddison.

Eddison quickly pulled out his phone, and Weston focused back on Axel. “Search around again.”

Axel left without a word, and Weston found himself looking as well. He even took to the trees, trying to get a better view.
